Stick n’ Stitch

Stitch n’ Bitch - Los Angeles moderator Allison and her husband Jeff recently organized a special SnB meet-up at a hockey game: UCLA vs. Stanford at the Bruins’ home ice in El Segundo (Jeff plays for the Bruins). Combining knitting, hockey, an opportunity to wear some of our hand-knit items, a discounted entry fee, and an awesome bag of knit-goodies to the first 25 SnB’ers…I mean, I really couldn’t not go, now could I?

Well, when I arrived home that evening, I really wasn’t in the mood to go out. I attended a memorial for a colleague from work earlier, so between the emotional rollercoaster I’d been on that day, my puffy irritated eyes, and the burgeoning headache I felt coming on, I was ready to pack it in for the night. Would have, too, if I hadn’t assured my carpool partner that morning I’d be there. My friend Janis was also less than enthusiastic about going out for a variety of reasons, but in the spirit of misery-loves-company, I took a few aspirin and strong-armed gently persuaded her to come with me.

I’m so glad we went.

UCLA vs. Stanford

The Bruins play at the Toyota Sports Center, practice facility for the LA Kings, Lakers, and Sparks and home to a variety of community hockey teams. After we arrived and received our goodie bags (which, BTW, were awesome: Mission Falls cotton, Mango Moon wool, Clover needles… GOOD stuff, all compliments of Allison’s company, SuperCrafty.com. Big thanks to Allison for all the nifty swag!), and got our shnacks from the concession stand (the hot cocoa was excellent), we met up with my carpool pal Kathy and headed for the rink. The SnB contingent took up nearly an entire section of bleachers:

I don’t entirely understand the rules, but I’ve always enjoyed hockey games. Between watching guys getting pasted into the wall and the occasional fight, hockey seems so clean, so elegant, as the players glide from one end of the rink to the other. It was a spirited match-up with the teams swapping goals, one after the other. I am also ridiculously entertained by the zamboni.
It's zamboni time!

We snacked. We knitted. We cheered. We chatted about projects. We heckled.

I like watching the goalies stretch - it looks like yoga except with an insane amount of protective gear. X-Treme yoga.

Kathy doesn’t knit but did bring along a sewing project to work on…

A fun time was had by all.

Oh yeah, the game. UCLA beat Stanford 5-4 in sudden-death overtime. Exciting!

I was there, too! It was an incredibly generous swag bag– thanks to allison! I can’t wait to figure out what to make with my pretty pink skein.
I wish I had had something woolly to keep warm, though. Who knew it would be freezing next to the ice…. right?
Thanks for posting the pictures!
PS Funny how the game takes up one line at the end :-) That’s how I tell it to my friends, too.

I’m so glad you came and had a great time. Great photos! Mind of I borrow one to post on my blog? I forgot my camera!!

Allison: I would be pleased as pie to have my photo on your blog; it’s small compensation for your organizing such a great event!

Just wanted to say thanks again for a great event. The gift bags were awesome.

[...] I first heard of Allison when I joined the Stitch n’Bitch-LA Yahoo group (she was one of the moderators). There were a few other brief encounters along the way: I made a little SnB logo for the site and she was my contact; we met at a SnB meetup; I attended a UCLA hockey/knit event that she and her husband organized… We were members of the same local knitting community, but I really didn’t know much about her personally until I read this post in January over at Crazy Aunt Purl’s.
